Prompt engineering for agents is writing the precise instructions that tell an AI agent how to behave in production — what tone to use with customers, what data to pull, when to escalate to a human. Unlike casual ChatGPT prompts, agent prompts need to handle edge cases: what does the agent do when a customer is angry, when data is missing, when two systems disagree? Getting this right is the difference between an agent your team trusts and one they work around.

Your customer-facing voice agent handles 200 calls a day. The prompt tells it to 'be helpful and professional.' On call 147, a customer says: 'I have been waiting three weeks for a part and nobody has called me back.' The agent, following its prompt to be helpful, offers to schedule another appointment — which is exactly the wrong move when the customer is already frustrated about broken promises. A well-engineered prompt handles this: 'When a customer expresses frustration about delayed service, acknowledge the delay, look up the specific job status, provide a concrete update, and transfer to a manager if the delay exceeds 10 business days.'

The mistake is writing prompts for the happy path. Your agent will perform fine when customers ask simple questions in a pleasant tone. It will fail on the calls that matter most — the angry customer, the edge case, the ambiguous request. Production prompt engineering means writing instructions for the 30% of interactions that do not follow the script, because those are the ones that damage or save customer relationships.
